ALTAR OF OBLIVION
Epic Doom/Heavy Metal from Denmark
The debut full length "Sinews of Anguish - Opus 1 in D Minor" has been on constant rotation since it's release in 2009, and in my opinion, they have become the best band playing this style of music this side of 2000. The vocals of Mik Mentor have gained range and his performance on this EP is stunning. No longer relying on his trademark baritone voice, he has opened up a new sound for the band while retaining the mournful tone that the music calls for. And again, the Melancholic Master, Martin Meyer Mendelssohn Sparvath has created a bleak, powerful, and majestic atmosphere through melodic guitar lines and his signature hard-as-nails riffs. The major change from their debut LP is a more energetic approach to the songs, showcased in the re-recording of "Threshold to Oblivion (My Wrecked Mind) from the bands first release "The Shadow Era Demo", and it has finally got the treatment this catchy song deserves. The "Salvation" EP and the band's forthcoming LP, "A Grand Gesture Of Defiance" will solidify them as an elite in the genre, along side legends Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, and Sorcerer.
